This 1911 King George V gold sovereign was minted in Sydney, Australia. Struck in 22 carat gold, the reverse features Pistrucci’s classic St George and Dragon reverse.
It was not until 1911 that coins were issued with George’s portrait even though he acceded the throne on May 6th 1910. All British coins continued to use Edward’s portrait up until this time. The 1911 Sydney mint gold sovereign features the Bare Head Portrait which was created by Australian designer Bertram Mackennal. His initials B.K. are located in the truncation. The coin inscription reads GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP:
The reverse of the 1911 gold sovereign features the traditional St George and Dragon design created by Benedetto Pistrucci; his initials are situated to the right of the date.The S mint mark above the date shows that the coin was issued in Sydney.
