The ten pencecoin is a small circulating denomination of the British (decimal)Pound Sterling. 10 pence equal one tenth of a pound.

In August 2005 the RoyalMint launched a competition to find new reverse designs for all circulatingcoins apart from the £2 coin. The winner, announced in April 2008, was Matthew Dent, whose designs were gradually introduced into the circulatingBritish coinage from mid-2008. In a world-first concept, the designs forthe 1p2p5p10p20p and 50p coins depict sections of the Royal Shield that form thewhole shield when placed together. The shield in its entirety was featured onthe £1 coin (now discontinued).

This 10p coindesign, which replaced the earlier 10p design by Christopher Ironside, depicts the first quarter of the shield, showingthe lions passant from the Royal Banner of England, with the words TENPENCE above the shield design. The coin’s obverse remains largelyunchanged, but the beading (the ring of dots around the coin’s circumference),which no longer features on the coin’s reverse, has also been removed from theobverse.

The ten pence coin was originally minted fromcupronickel, but in January 2012 itchanged to nickel-plated steel due to the increasing price ofmetal. From January 2013, the Royal Mint began a programme to gradually removethe previous cupro-nickel coins from circulation with replacement by the nickel-platedsteel versions.

Five pence and tenpence coins are legal tender only up to the sum of £5; this means itis permissible to refuse payment of sums greater than this amount in 5pand 10p coins to settle a debt.

Coins issued in 2013 havenow been circulating for 11 years.
